Common item reference
The code links your store requirement to the item being quoted, reducing ambiguity between departments and suppliers.
A complete ship-store IMPA code can identify the item; a firm quotation still needs quantity, certificate scope, deviations, delivery term and required date. Here is how to keep that information in one technically clear RFQ.
The code links your store requirement to the item being quoted, reducing ambiguity between departments and suppliers.
Valve type, size, pressure rating, material and end connection are checked before a quotation is issued.
Code, quantity, class requirement and destination port are enough to start technical confirmation and commercial checking.
Send the complete code and the commercial requirements. Add technical details only when your requirement differs from the catalogue item or when the item is for a specific vessel or project.
| Information | Priority | What to provide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMPA code | Required | The full code exactly as shown on the requisition | Prevents a partial or mistyped code from identifying the wrong item |
| Quantity | Required | Total quantity and, if applicable, quantity per size or code | Affects price level, manufacturing arrangement and packing |
| Certificate requirement | Order-specific | Classification society and whether a survey or certificate is required | Determines documentation and manufacturing arrangements before production |
| Destination port | Required | Port or delivery term, such as FOB, CIF or DAP | Allows freight, packing and quotation terms to be checked |
| Required date | Recommended | Required delivery date or vessel/project schedule | Distinguishes stock supply from production or special manufacturing |
| Deviations | When applicable | Any change to size, material, pressure, connection, operation or packing | A modified item is no longer a like-for-like catalogue reference |
| Documents | Recommended | MTC, pressure-test record, packing list or marking requirements | Aligns documentation with QA and receiving inspection |
For an IMPA-code inquiry, these points are confirmed against the identified item and your stated deviations. They are also the core checklist when no IMPA code is available.
| Technical point | Points to confirm |
|---|---|
| Valve type and model | Globe, gate, check, butterfly, ball, safety valve, cock, strainer or other piping component; referenced model or equivalent model |
| Standard | GB/T, CB/T, CBM, JIS, ANSI, API, DIN, BS, among others, as required by the item or project specification |
| Size | DN, NPS or A/B designation; for multi-size orders, size and quantity per line |
| Pressure rating | PN, Class or K rating, including the pressure basis used by the standard |
| Materials | Body, bonnet, disc, seat, stem, trim and sealing materials |
| End connection | Flanged, threaded, wafer, butt-welded, socket-welded or hose connection, including drilling or thread standard where applicable |
| Operation | Handwheel, lever, gear, electric, pneumatic or hydraulic operation |
| Service conditions | Medium and working temperature, especially for seawater, steam, fuel oil, lubricating oil, air or firefighting service |
| Testing and documents | Pressure testing, material certificate, inspection, marking and packing requirements |

| Error | Result | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete code | The item cannot be identified with certainty | Copy the complete code from the requisition or stores system |
| Modified specification not stated | The supplier quotes the catalogue item instead of the required item | State any material, size, pressure or connection deviation |
| No quantity or destination | Only an indicative reply is possible | Include quantity, delivery term and destination port |
| Certificate added late | Documentation may not match the production arrangement | State class-society and documentation needs in the first message |
| Mixed line items | Codes and quantities can be matched to the wrong products | Use one line per code and quantity |
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What should I send with an IMPA code? | Send the full IMPA code, quantity per code, classification-society or certificate requirement, destination port, delivery term, and required date. Add any deviation from the standard store item, such as material, connection, or spare-part marking. Use the IMPA RFQ checklist. |
| Can Simoa quote from an IMPA code only? | An IMPA code can start item identification and an indicative reply. A firm quotation still requires the confirmed item scope, quantity, certificate requirement, destination or delivery term, and commercial conditions. |
| How are size, pressure, material, and connection confirmed when an IMPA code is incomplete? | The requisition notes, nameplate, drawing, or vessel specification are checked with the code. Confirm at least size, pressure rating, body and trim materials, end connection, service medium, and temperature before a technical match is treated as confirmed. |
| What is the difference between an IMPA code, manufacturer model, and product standard? | An IMPA code is a marine store procurement reference, a manufacturer model identifies a specific supplied configuration, and a product standard defines the design and acceptance basis. All three may appear on one order and should be recorded separately. |
| What are common mistakes when quoting marine valves by IMPA code? | Common mistakes are partial or mistyped codes, no quantity, using one code for multiple sizes, assuming a class certificate is included, changing body or trim material without approval, omitting destination and date, and mixing several items on one line. One code, one quantity, and one certificate line prevent most mismatches. |
| Is an IMPA code a marine valve product standard? | No. It is a procurement and marine-store reference. The code helps identify the item, but valve type, model or standard, size, pressure rating, material, connection, and any deviation still require technical confirmation. |
| What minimum information should accompany an IMPA code? | Send the complete code, quantity, certificate or classification-society requirement, destination port or delivery term, and required date. State deviations from the catalogue item and any document or packing requirements where applicable. |
| Can a firm quotation be issued from an IMPA code alone? | The code can start item identification and an indicative reply. A firm quotation requires the confirmed product scope, quantity, certificate requirement, delivery term, and commercial conditions. |
| What if the requirement differs from the IMPA catalogue item? | State the deviation in the first RFQ. A change in size, material, pressure, connection, operation, or packing is no longer a like-for-like catalogue reference and must be confirmed before quotation. |
Simoa Industrial uses IMPA codes as procurement references. We do not issue IMPA codes; for authoritative definitions, use the current IMPA catalogue or your vessel requisition.
The full code, quantity and commercial requirements are recorded on one RFQ line per item.
We cross-check the catalogue item and the corresponding valve specification before selecting a supply route.
Material, connection, operation, class documentation and delivery requirements are confirmed in writing.
You receive pricing, documentation terms, packing and lead time for the confirmed specification.
Use the RFQ form and enter the complete code. Add other details only where your requirement differs.
